Lesson Title: Creating and Organizing a Photo Set in Flickr
Objective: To tell the story of a common nursery rhyme or fairy tale through the use of photos organized in a Photo Set in Flickr.
Grade: Middle/High School
Subject: Computer Applications (or any subject area with a specific story line)
Approximate Time: 2 class periods; 80-90 minutes
Prior Actions Needed: 1) Upload personal photos and add Flickr photos to personal Photostream following all copyright and photo usage policies as necessary; 2) Select a common, teacher-approved nursery rhyme or fairy tale
Materials Needed: Computer, Internet Access, Peer Review Rubric, Teacher Rubric
Hook: As students arrive for class, have a Flickr Photo Set running as a slideshow to show an example of what's possible. (Consider making it something the students will relate to, such as a recent school event, or something humorous around the school, etc...)
Procedure:
1. Review copyright laws and photo usage policies for Flickr in case students find they need additional photos; encourage use of Creative Commons. (See resources below for a video of Creative Commons in Flickr.)
2. Demonstrate to students how to create a Photo Set using their personal Photostream in Flickr. (See resources below for a video and step-by-step instructions for creating a Photo Set in Flickr.)
3. Ask students to create and organize their own Photo Set in Flickr utilizing at least 10 pictures. The Photo Set should tell the story of the common nursery rhyme or fairy tale previously selected.
4. Students will utilize half of the last day to participate in peer review. They will utilize the rubric and help find any errors or missing components in a classmate's project. The rubric will be filled out and submitted to the teacher as part of the final assessment.
5. Students will submit their story to the teacher, and they will present it to the entire class. The presentation should speak for itself, but students should be prepared to answer questions about their choice of photos after others have viewed it.
Allow students to guess what nursery rhyme or fairy tale was used if it's not obvious.
Note: This activity can be modified to have the students download pictures from Flickr and use them to create a slideshow in Microsoft PowerPoint or similar software. In this case, image attribution should be assessed.

Required Components (to be included in rubric):
  • At least 10 pictures
  • Story is about a common nursery rhyme or fairy tale
  • Story flows, has a logical order, and has some resemblance to the original nursery rhyme or fairy tale
  • Proofread for spelling and grammar (no errors)
  • Citation for each picture
(citations will not appear when running this as a slideshow in Flickr; however, this is critical if you choose to have students create this in PowerPoint)
  • Peer Review (completed one for someone else & had someone complete one for you)
  • Understand why you chose your pictures, and be prepared to explain if asked after your presentation

Rubrics:
Peer Rubric ()
This rubric is a simplified version of the teacher rubric. It will be used by the students to assist each other in the review, analyze, and redesign process that is critical to most projects, especially multimedia projects.

Teacher Rubric ()
This rubric is the teacher rubric which is designed to provide a score. It contains some additional criteria than the peer rubric.

Assessment:
1. Students will be assessed on their usage of the peer review rubric. (i.e., Did they fix the noted changes?)
2. Students will be assessed on their photo story through the teacher rubric.
3. Students will be assessed on their ability to answer questions about their choice of photos.
4. Students will be assessed on their completion of a peer rubric of classmate's assignment.
